Tonsillitis is the infection that, as the name suggests, affects the tonsil of a person. Mostly occurring in young children, tonsillitis is caused either by a virus or a bacterium. There are three main types of tonsillitis - acute, subacute and chronic. While the former is of bacterial or viral origin, the second is caused by the bacterium Actinomyces and the third can be caused by any bacteria. Tonsillitis needs to be treated early, lest it becomes a major problem, especialy in the later stages. The most common symptoms of the ailment are sore throat and fever.
